Linking domains vs. backlinks

A backlink is any link from another website to yours. Linking root domains counts how many different websites those links come from. Ten links from one blog add up to ten backlinks but only one linking domain.

Search engines value diversity, so the number of linking domains is usually the better measure of link strength. The links per domain column helps you spot unusual patterns: a very high ratio often means sitewide footer or sidebar links.

What this backlink checker shows

This free tool reports link counts from the Moz link index — perfect for quick comparisons and competitor research. It does not list individual backlinks; for a full link-by-link audit, use a dedicated suite such as Moz Link Explorer or Ahrefs Site Explorer.

FAQ

Backlink Checker FAQ

How many backlinks do I need to rank?

There is no fixed number. Look at the linking domains of the pages ranking for your keyword and aim to match or beat them with relevant, high-quality links.

Why are the numbers different from Ahrefs or Semrush?

Every tool crawls the web with its own crawler and keeps its own index, so link counts always differ. Compare sites using the same tool.

Are all backlinks good?

No. Links from relevant, trusted sites help; links from spammy networks can hurt. Check the Spam Score of sites before you pursue links from them.

Does this tool list my individual backlinks?

No. It shows totals (linking domains and external backlinks) for fast bulk comparisons.
