What is Spam Score?

Spam Score is a Moz metric that estimates the percentage of sites with similar features that Moz found to be penalized or banned by Google. It is based on 27 common signals — things like thin content, unnatural anchor text and link patterns — not on a manual review of the site.

How to read the results

  • 1–30% — low risk. Most healthy websites fall in this range.
  • 31–60% — medium risk. Look at the site's content and backlinks before you link to it.
  • 61–100% — high risk. Many spam-like signals. Avoid unless you have a very good reason and have checked manually.

A high Spam Score is a warning, not a verdict. Brand-new sites and small niche sites sometimes score higher simply because they have very few links. Always combine it with Domain Authority and a quick visit to the site.

FAQ

Spam Score Checker FAQ

What is a good Spam Score?

Anything from 1% to 30% is considered low and is normal for legitimate websites. Scores of 31–60% are medium and scores above 60% are high.

Does a high Spam Score mean Google penalized the site?

No. Spam Score only says the site shares features with sites that were penalized. It is a prompt to investigate, not proof of a penalty.

How can I lower my Spam Score?

Earn links from relevant, trustworthy sites, remove or disavow obviously manipulative links you built in the past, and make sure your site has substantial, original content and clear contact information.

Why does a domain show "N/A"?

Moz could not calculate a Spam Score — usually because the site is very new or has too few links in the Moz index.
