Why an expired SSL certificate is an SEO emergency
When a certificate expires, Chrome, Safari and Firefox show a full-page “Your connection is not private” warning. Most visitors leave immediately, conversions drop to zero and Googlebot may stop crawling. HTTPS has also been a lightweight Google ranking signal since 2014.
How this checker works
We run two independent checks. First, we open a live HTTPS connection to the site; it only succeeds if the certificate is valid, trusted and matches the hostname. Second, we look up the hostname in public Certificate Transparency (CT) logs via crt.sh, where every publicly trusted certificate must be recorded. That gives us the issuer and the exact validity window.
Because CT logs list every certificate issued for a name, a site with several active certificates (for example behind a CDN) may serve a different one than the newest logged certificate. The live connection test confirms what visitors actually get.
FAQ
SSL Checker FAQ
How often do SSL certificates expire?
Publicly trusted certificates are currently valid for at most about 13 months, and many (such as Let’s Encrypt) last only 90 days. Industry rules are shortening lifetimes further, so automatic renewal is essential.
What is Certificate Transparency?
An open system of public logs where certificate authorities must record every certificate they issue. Anyone can search the logs, which helps detect mis-issued certificates.
Is a free certificate as good as a paid one?
For encryption and SEO, yes. Free domain-validated certificates from Let’s Encrypt or your host give the same padlock and the same ranking benefit.
Why does the tool show several certificates?
Large sites often have multiple valid certificates at once — for different CDNs, regions or renewal overlaps. We show the newest one first.
