What is website authority?
Website authority is shorthand for how strong a site's backlink profile is compared with the rest of the web. Search engines don't publish an "authority" number, so SEO tools model it from link data. The most widely used model is Moz's Domain Authority (DA), a 1–100 score that predicts how well a whole domain can rank.
This checker turns the raw numbers into an authority grade so you can size up a site in a second: A+ (DA 81–100), A (61–80), B (41–60), C (21–40) and D (1–20). The grade is our simple summary of DA; the underlying metrics are shown next to it.
How to use the authority overview
- Competitor benchmarking: see how far ahead the sites ranking above you really are.
- Link prospecting: prioritize outreach to sites with high authority and a low Spam Score.
- Buying a website or domain: confirm that its authority comes from many linking domains, not a handful of suspicious ones.
FAQ
Website Authority Checker FAQ
What does the authority grade mean?
It is a quick summary of Moz Domain Authority: A+ for DA 81–100, A for 61–80, B for 41–60, C for 21–40 and D for 1–20. It is not a Google metric — it simply makes comparisons faster.
Is website authority the same as Google PageRank?
No. Google stopped publishing PageRank in 2016. Domain Authority is a third-party estimate from Moz that tends to correlate with ranking ability, but Google does not use it.
Why do linking domains matter more than backlinks?
Fifty links from one site count far less than one link each from fifty different sites. That is why linking root domains is the strongest input to Domain Authority.
How often do the numbers change?
Moz refreshes its link index continuously and recalculates authority regularly. We cache results for a while to keep the tool free, so very recent link changes may take some time to appear.
